Abdominal Ultrasound For Abdominal Pain
An upper abdominal ultrasound involves a detailed investigation to look at the size, character and shape of the kidneys, liver, gall bladder, spleen, biliary systems and pancreas. The ultrasound waves are created using sound waves; we will also use an ultrasound gel to help move the ultrasound across your abdomen. Other than being able to feel pressure, contact with ultrasound will only give you slight discomfort but no pain whatsoever.
If you are experiencing any abdominal pain, bloating or discomfort, you should have an upper abdomen scan to check for any underlying conditions. It could highlight an abdominal aortic aneurysm, any enlargement or damage to your upper body.
This scan is available to patients over the age of 18 years. You will be required to fast for at least 6 hours before your scan, and only clear fluids are allowed. This will allow your sonographer to get a clearer picture when they carry out your abdominal ultrasound.
The sound waves bounce off your blood vessels and soft tissues to create the image.
